United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon commemorated July 12 as Malala Day.
The day is intended to represent the goal of education for all children.
In honour of the Pakistani child activist Malala Yousafzai, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon extended his support to the young girl and her fight for education, describing her as the “global symbol” of every girl’s right to education.
The UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Global Education, former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown had earlier declared the date of November 10, a month after Yousafzai was shot by the Taliban for campaigning for girls’ education in Pakistan, as Malala Day. However, the date was later changed to her birthday.
Also Important for India because
Among them (7) were two Indians, 21-year-old Ashwini from Bangalore and 15-year-old Razia from Uttar Pradesh who were awarded with UN Special Envoy for Global Education’s Youth Courage Award for Education.
Malala’s Pakistani friend Shazia, who was hurt when Taliban shot Malala last year, was also awarded along with girls from Bangladesh, Nepal, Morocco and Sierra Leone.
Ashwini was awarded for fighting against odds to study, then using that education to campaign for other children with disabilities and to enable them to achieve the education they deserve.
